About Penedès

A Brief History of Penedès Wine

Penedès, located in Catalonia, Spain, has been a center for winemaking since the times of the Phoenicians and Romans. In the 19th century, it became a hub for Cava production, Spain’s answer to Champagne. Today, Penedès is Spain’s most diverse wine region, producing Cava, white, red, and rosé wines with both indigenous and international grape varieties.

Common Grapes Grown in Penedès

  • Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Parellada – The three primary grapes in Cava, contributing freshness and complexity.
  • Chardonnay & Pinot Noir – Used in premium Cava blends and still wines.
  • Tempranillo (Ull de Llebre), Garnacha, Monastrell – Key red varieties, producing fruit-forward, structured wines.
  • Malvasia de Sitges – A historic white grape used in sweet and aromatic wines.

Winemaking Techniques in Penedès

  • Traditional Method (Méthode Champenoise) – Used for making high-quality Cava, featuring second fermentation in the bottle.
  • Organic and biodynamic farming – Many wineries focus on sustainable viticulture.
    Aging requirements:
  • Cava Reserva (minimum 15 months on lees)
  • Cava Gran Reserva (aged 30+ months)
  • Cava de Paraje Calificado (premium single-vineyard Cava)

Food Pairings with Penedès Wines

  • Cava – Pairs beautifully with seafood, tapas, and jamón ibérico.
  • Still whites (Xarel·lo-based) – Great with paella, grilled fish, and fresh cheeses.
  • Red Penedès wines – Complement roasted meats, Catalan stews, and aged Manchego cheese.

With its rich history and innovation, Penedès is one of Spain’s most exciting wine regions, known especially for world-class Cava.
