An obvious match for richer, tomato-based pastas like a classical ragù, we also love the idea of this wine alongside a seafood stew like a Bouillabaisse or Cioppino. If you'd like to go the vegetarian route, this will be excellent with a mushroom risotto, or a plate of char-grilled, seasonal veggies.
Tasting Notes
Bardolino has slowly become one of our favorite places to look for new Italian wines. Nestled near the shores of Lake Garda, these wines utilize the same grapes as Valpolicella and Amarone, with more emphasis on the easy-going Molinara grape than the more structured and powerful Corvina, giving the wines a bit more freshness, and lightness on their feet. That said, the Superiore wines from the region, like this wine from Villa Calicantus, have some real concentration, and enjoy a short élevage in a touch of new oak, as well as at least a year conditioning in the bottle. This wine opens up with a bright aroma of red fruit, and touch of herbal green, and moves to a palate of remarkable purity and softness, with dark fruits, and a lick of well-integrated tannins in the finish. Supremely classy and elegant.
