A bigger, bolder red wine like this will always show well with red meat that's been browned to perfection, but the abundant fruit here also invites pairing with the sweetness of certain vegetables (think beets and fall squashes). The wine could also be great with game meats and wilder fare.
Tasting Notes
Ever since the film, Sideways, came on the scene, the word Merlot has seemingly taken on more and more negative connotations - whether people assume it's too sweet, or not serious, or cheap, all of these notions couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, some of the world's most expensive and most prestigious wines are made from this grape (including the 1986 Cheval Blanc Giammatti's character drinks at McDonalds). This wine, made primarily from Merlot, shows the potential of the grape, with a signature attractive fruit character, soft, silky tannins, and an unmistakable scorched clay minerality. This is a wine to turn even the most strict Merlot-skeptics into believers.
