The mineral, linear element of this wine, along with its medium body make it a great partner for fuller seafood preparations. Whole-grilled Brook Trout, Trout amandine, or even Southern-style blackened catfish will all play very nicely against the Goldfish. Heartier vegetable preparations like roasted brussels with bleu cheese, smoked vegetables with parmesan, or even a classic Caesar salad are excellent options too.
Tasting Notes
Herbert Zillinger, or "Herbie," as he's known to just about everyone, is a man of humble, quiet, confidence. He and his wife Carmen, basically run their estate together, and they make fabulous, stylish wines from classic Austrian varieties. This blend of Grüner Veltliner and Traminer opens up with a classy, flinty, mineral aroma that's almost reminiscent of white Burgundy (but without the oak). The palate is long, textured, and supported by full notes of citrus fruits, finishing with some real zip. It's a tremendous example of how significant a winemaker's touch can be, here Herbie has transformed his Grüner into something totally unique.
