Horseradish is a very common seasoning in most of Austria, and this wine is begging for roast beef and a little au jus too. For a lighter pairing, aim for richer fishes like tuna or salmon, and darker, sweeter veggies like beets, fall squashes, and grander onion preparations.
Tasting Notes
Blaufränkisch is one of those grapes that is like a blank canvas for winemakers - it shows its origins well, and takes to winemaking style incredibly well. In this instance, a lot of sun makes for a ripe example of the harder-to-pronounce grape variety, and a deft hand in the winery make it a surprisingly big and bold wine. With soft and expressive cherry and berry fruit, tannins that assert themselves and fade, and a finish that leaves you wanting more, this is a wine that lets you wrap your mind around a different kind of Austrian red.
