A wine with the inherent earthy quality of the Cocagne will do especially well with game meats, and particularly earthy veggies: think venison, duck, or whatever you can get your hands on with a sweeter reduction, or any manner of cooked mushroom or eggplant.
Tasting Notes
Cocagne may look like a funny name for a wine, but in Medieval times in France, it was a well-known reference to an imaginary Utopian land. This bottle, from Le Fief Noir, features the two partners behind this state looking out at their own new, "land of plenty." Made from one of the Loire's least-understood grapes, Grolleau, it opens with distinctly earthen, almost burnt-match elements while the palate is rich with fruit, and vibrant with acidity. A great introduction to natural wine for the uninitiated.
